GrantSlate vs Instrumentl

These are not two versions of the same product, and it is worth being blunt about that. Instrumentl is a grant discovery and pipeline platform. GrantSlate drafts the proposal. If you need to find funders at volume, we are not a substitute for them at any price.

Prices and features checked 14 October 2026

What it is for

GrantSlate

Writing the proposal. One job, done on every plan including the free one.

Instrumentl

Finding grants, tracking deadlines and pipeline, and managing awards. Their published material describes a platform for the whole pre- and post-award process.

Funder database

GrantSlate

None, deliberately. We search live programs when you ask, but we do not maintain a funder index.

Instrumentl

37,000+ active RFPs and 450,000+ funder profiles, per their pricing page. That database is the core of what you pay for.

AI drafting

GrantSlate

The product itself: a full draft from your organization profile and the funder's guidelines.

Instrumentl

'Apply' — in-app application forms, application snippets and an advisor — is listed on the Pre-Award tier and above, not on Discover.

Pipeline, deadlines and reminders

GrantSlate

None. We draft proposals; we do not manage your grant calendar.

Instrumentl

Pipeline tracking, task management, Google and Outlook calendar integration, and pre-award reports.

Post-award tracking

GrantSlate

None.

Instrumentl

Spenddown visibility, accounting integrations and budget-versus-actual reporting on the Full Lifecycle tier.

Budget arithmetic

GrantSlate

The budget narrative is read back out of the draft, added up separately, and compared with the amount you requested.

Instrumentl

We have not tested Apply's arithmetic and make no claim about it either way. Their published material describes drafting from your past content and their funder data, and we will not pretend to know more than that.

Published price

GrantSlate

Free for two drafts, then $79 a month for Pro and $199 for Team.

Instrumentl

Discover $299/month billed annually, or $349 monthly. Pre-Award $499/month annually, or $579 monthly. Full Lifecycle $999/month annually, or $1,159 monthly. Enterprise is custom.

Instrumentl's prices and tier contents are as published on their pricing page on 14 October 2026. Check it before you decide — vendor pricing and packaging change, and their site is the authority, not ours.

Which one is right for you

Choose GrantSlate if

  • You already know which funders you are approaching, and the bottleneck is the writing.

  • You write your own proposals and a pipeline tool would be overhead.

  • You want the drafting to cost $79 a month rather than $499.

  • You are a small organization or a solo grant writer, not a grants department.

Choose Instrumentl if

  • You need to find funders at volume and keep a portfolio of deadlines straight.

  • You have a grants team collaborating on applications.

  • You need post-award spend tracking or accounting integrations.

  • A subscription in the hundreds of dollars a month is proportionate to the grant revenue you are chasing.

Questions people ask

Can I use both?

Yes, and plenty of teams should. Nothing about GrantSlate requires you to stop using a discovery database, and nothing about Instrumentl stops you from drafting here. If you already pay for funder research, keep it and add the writing.

Is GrantSlate a cheaper Instrumentl?

No, and we would rather say so than take the signup. We do no discovery, no pipeline and no post-award work. If those are what you need, we are not a substitute at any price.

Why is GrantSlate so much cheaper?

We do one job. There is no funder database to license and keep current, no CRM or accounting integrations, and no onboarding team. The price reflects the scope, not a discount on the same thing.

Does GrantSlate have a funder database?

No, deliberately. We search live programs when you describe what you do, and you can use that without an account, but we do not maintain a searchable index of funders. That decision is a large part of why the drafting is affordable.

Are these prices current?

They are as published on Instrumentl's own pricing page on 14 October 2026, and vendor pricing changes. Check their page before you decide.
